The Chicago Cubs look to get closer into the St. Louis Cardinals with a win and some help from the Pirates at Pittsburgh.
The Pirates did their part with a 9-4 win over the NL Central leading Cardinals. The Cubs failed to draw because of a loss. They even took a 1-0 lead at the 3rd and after that things turned to mush in a rush.
The Brewers responded with 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning and cruised to a 7-1 triumph Friday night. With the loss, the Diamondbacks were able to inch at the hunt. The Cubs hold a 2.5-game edge on the Diamondbacks going into today. The fact that we’re talking about the Diamondbacks is still really a win for them.
As far as the Brewers are concerned, they have an outside shot at visiting the postseason. Therefore there’s something to play for this particular month, at least in the moment, their season isn’t dead yet. The Brewers are tied together with Phillies and the Mets who are all four matches of their wildcard. The biggest disappointing season that bunch has to visit the Phillies. They were the only team who spent bucks.
The Cubs missing out on the postseason would be a disappointing season. They’ve got too much talent on board not to go to the Wild Card Game. It will be a long offseason for the Cubs when they throw away this, but they also control their own destiny using a 2.5-game lead.
Yu Darvish pitching down the stretch could help bring about that. Darvish has contributed the Cubs a increase recently and watching him fight down the stretch would be catastrophic. Darvish is expected to get the start Saturday. Head below for our free Cubs vs. Brewers select.

Yu Darvish has demonstrated he can be an elite pitcher. Since July 12th, Darvish has some efforts where he had been painting a canvas on the hill for the Cubs. He can be a pitcher who oftentimes one of the most overrated hurlers in baseball, but Darvish has lived up to expectations the majority of the time. Ever since that time, Darvish has three excursions in which he blanked the resistance with no runs.
His most impressive of the group had been against the Phillies on August 15th, where Darvish allowed 4 hits and no runs over seven innings. In his performance, Darvish was strong with 1-run allowed against the Mets and 5 hits. Also notice that on the board, he has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last nine trips. Darvish has been excellent in spurts lately. We’ll see if he could get one of those starts.
The street has been fine to Darvish and he has been fantastic against this roster before. Darvish has posted an ERA of 3.50 and 1.04 WHIP in 82.1 innings on the street. What’s more, the Brewers are currently hitting on just .202 at 104 at-bats contrary to Darvish. Gio Gonzalez continues to be good against the Cubs as well, but they’ve also scored 17 runs in 198 at-bats.
Gio has been struggling of late, with a 5.54 ERA along with also 1.85 WHIP in his past three outings. Miller Park was a haunted house for him, as he’s gotten hammered for a 5.64 ERA rather than a 2.92 ERA on the road. The long balls have hurt himyielding 6 of them in 30.1 innings of work. After a poor performance Friday night, expect the Cubs to return to Miller Park having a much better effort. Think about the Cubs here.
