Somerset’s Tom Banton named PCA Player of the Month for August

The Tom Banton of somerset has since won the August PCA Player of the Month award following an outstanding month which saw him score his T20 century.
Banton was the clear winner with 53 per cent of the general vote, ahead of team-mate Tom Abell (22 per cent) Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth (13 percent ) and Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen (12 percent ).
With the nominees scoring more MVP points than anyone in August, the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings had previously selected the shortlist.
Fans who voted through the PCA and Sky Sports sites had the final state, with Banton becoming the fifth distinct player to win the award this season, following Liam Dawson at April, Simon Harmer at May, Hassan Azad at June and Ravi Ashwin at July.
“It is certainly a very special moment. It’s always nice to see my name join a listing of such gifted players,” said Banton, 20.
Although Craig Overton along with Somerset duo Lewis Gregory are flying high in the MVP, banton was nominated for the award along with Abell.
“It is fantastic having such excellent players around you. They have helped me much as I’ve come to the team which is fine for me being a child and being in my very first year.”
For Banton, the month found him score 428 runs in an average of 38.9 across both formats using his highlight definitely his eponymous T20 hundred from Kent at Taunton.
“I’ve never felt enthusiasm like it was somewhat mad to be fair. I fought to sleep soundly for the next few nights which I presume was still due to the excitement.”
Banton’s batting exploits watched him accrue 116.31 MVP points to the month because area alone – more than every other participant.
Although Somerset only missed out on a Blast sought following a thrilling closing group-stage fixture against Middlesex, the side has set his sights on additional victory this season.
He said:”The aim is to try and win the next few matches and raise the Specsavers County Championship name at our home floor in September. That could be the dream and that is what everyone here in Taunton desires.
“If I scored a hundred in the Championship then I would be the youngest participant to receive one in every one of the significant competitions [overtaking Jason Roy], therefore personally I want to do that. But the primary issue is merely to try and keep winning matches.”
Beyond this, if Banton maintains on producing this August, as he’s done the inevitable questions regarding an England call-up will last to get asked. The child is eager to concentrate on the here and now.
“Obviously the England white ball group are so robust and have just come off the back of winning the World Cup. You never understand, should you keep on doing although it is going to be tough to break into that group. Hopefully one day I’ll find that phone call.
“This year I’ve done better in white-ball cricket but I’m always attempting to increase in the longer format also. The chief objective is undoubtedly to play Test cricket for England but I’m just trying to remain realistic in the moment so white-ball cricket will come first.”
